BST OBEDIENCE/TEMPERMENT TEST
OBEDIENCE

THE FOLLOWING EXERCISES ARE TO BE PERFORMED BY ALL DOGS WISHING TO OBTAIN  A BST  CERTIFICATION.

The dog shall wear either a fur saver or choke chain with leash attached to the dead ring. Leashes may be no longer than 4 feet. All leashes and collars must be inspected and deemed suitable by a NWDA Official prior to beginning each test. Any portion of the test can be preformed off leash but leash must be removed prior to exercise.

This test is based on 100 points, a minimum of 60 points is achieved in order to pass this test. Additionally each dog will be evaluated with regard to its temperament. Any dog may not test more than once on any given day.

Each individual exercise begins with the basic position (dog at a sit at handlers side). The judge will signal handler to begin each exercise.

(Click on high-lighted areas for diagram)

Exercise 1: Heeling on Leash with gunshots (30 point exercise)

From basic position handler gives “heel” command. Handler and dog walk straight ahead a minimum of 20 paces (without stopping) execute a left hand turn and continue for a minimum of 10 paces and then execute right hand turn and then proceed a minimum of 10 paces, at this point one gun shot will be fired. dogs exhibiting gun shyness will be disqualified.  handler and dog will continue minimum of 10 more paces. At this point handler and dog execute a right hand turn and proceed a minimum of 15 paces at this point a second gunshot will be fired followed by a right hand turn and continue for a minimum of 10 paces at normal pace. Then without stopping handler changes pace first fast for a minimum of 10 paces followed by a minimum of 10 paces slow, with no normal paces in between. Handler and dog then proceed at a normal pace for 5 paces after which handler halts. Dog shall automatically sit, while remaining at handlers left, its shoulder even with the handlers knee. Handler influence and dogs that forge ahead or lagging behind will incur in a point deduction. The heel command may be given when changing pace and out of each starting position. The leash is held in the left hand and should be slack at all times.

Exercise 2: Heeling Through Crowd (15 point exercise)

At judges order handler heels forward a minimum of 5 paces, and executes a left hand turn continues a minimum of 10 paces and proceeds to walk through a crowd of no less than 6 people, handler will heel in a figure eight pattern through crowd stopping in the center of the crowd. Judge will ask crowd to move in on dog while handler and dog remain in a basic position. At judges discretion the crowd will be dismissed. Judge will then dismiss handler and dog. Exercise complete

Exercise 3: Sit in Motion (15 point exercise)

From the starting point, with the dog in the basic position, the handler walks straight ahead, dog heeling, a minimum of 10  paces and gives "sit" command, drops leash and without stopping, changing pace or looking back, continues forward another 30 paces, halts and turns to face the dog. At judge's order handler returns to dog, resumes basic position and returns with the dog to start point. Exercise complete

Exercise 4: Down in Motion with Recall (20 point exercise)

From basic position dog and handler walk straight ahead a minimum of 10 paces, handler gives "down" command, upon which the dog should quickly lie down. Handler continues without stopping for another 30 paces, stops and turns facing the dog. Double commands, changing pace or looking back, are deemed handler help and will result in point deductions. At judge's signal handler recalls dog. Dog should run to handler sit directly in front. Judge will signal handler to finish dog. If dog is trained to recall directly to heel position this is acceptable but the judge must be informed before exercise begins. Once dog is in the basic position judge will signal handler to heel back to start point. Exersice complete

Exercise 5: Retrieve of Thrown Article (4 point exercise)

From basic position handler must throw an approved article a minimum of 15 feet in front of them. At the Judges signal, the handler will command dog, any chosen word is acceptable. This command may also be accompanied by a brief gesture. The dog must go and pick up the article and bring it back to his handler. Exercise complete

Exercise 6: The Jump (6 point exercise)

Option 1:
From basic position 10 feet from jump. At judges signal handler will command dog to proceed over jump and then recall dog to basic position. Exercise complete

Option 2:
From basic position 10 feet from jump. At judges signal handler will give stay command and proceed to the right side of the jump, then at judges signal handler will command dog to proceed over jump and then recall dog to basic position. Exercise complete

Exercise 7: Long Down (10 point exercise)

At judge's direction handler will be asked to heel the dog to a designated area where the dog will be put on a long down.  Handler will then be directed out of sight of the downed dog for a min. of 60 seconds. At judges signal handler will return to dog and heel back to starting point. Exercise complete

PROTECTION

THE FOLLOWING EXERCISES ARE TO BE PERFORMED BY ALL DOGS WISHING TO OBTAIN  A  BST CERTIFICATION.

Only dogs which have passed the obedience and temperament test may take part in the Protection Test.

Dogs who fail this test due to training/control problems (i.e. refusing to out) may repeat the test. Dogs who fail the courage test portion of the BST may be prohibited from repeating the test upon further review by the NWDA. There is no limit on retesting.

The dog shall wear either a fur saver or choke chain with leash attached to the dead ring. All leashes and collars must be inspected and deemed suitable by a NWDA official prior to beginning this test. The helper may be outfitted with a sleeve or full-body suit, depending on the individual dog's training.

Exercise 1: Attack on Handler (50 point exercise)

Upon signal from the judge, handler gives heel command and walks straight ahead .When handler and dog reach a point of approximately 12 feet from the blind, the judge will instruct the decoy to come out of the blind and attack the handler, upon which the handler drops the leash. The dog should immediately engage the decoy and continue gripping while being driven by the decoy. Dog shall receive two moderate stick hits (clatter stick) with an interval of 5 steps between hits. If the dog fails to grip the decoy or comes off at any time, the decoy must continue to drive the dog. If the dog returns to the decoy and grips, the test will continue. If the dog fails to re-grip, the judge shall stop the test and the dog cannot pass. Upon signal from the judge, handler outs the dog. A total of three out commands are allowed. If the dog refuses to out after first command, handler may, upon judges instructions, approach half the distance to the dog to give second out command. If dog still refuses to out handler may, upon judges instruction, approach the dog and give final out command. This will reflect in the dogs final evaluation. Handler may not touch the dog. Following the out, the dog shall guard the decoy until the judge signals handler to pick up dog. While guarding, the dog should stay focused on the decoy. Barking is not required.

Exercise 2: The Courage Test

Upon signal from judge, handler takes hold of dog's collar. Decoy runs away to a distance of approximately 40 yards then turns and runs straight at dog in a threatening manner. Upon judge's signal, handler gives one command and sends dog on decoy. Dog should run towards decoy immediately, without hesitation, and show full commitment to the bite. The decoy will fire one shot at 15 yards and the last at 10 yards before dog engages decoy. The dog must continue to grip while being driven by decoy a short distance.  After the decoy locks up the dog will be command to out. Following the out the dog shall guard the decoy until judge signals handler to pick up dog. Dogs, who fail to engage the helper, come off the grip and do not immediately re-engage, or leave the decoy during guarding, will not pass the test. The protection test is completed.
